EXCLUSIVE: Rajkummar Rao Was Originally Supposed To Be One Of The Main Leads In Gangs Of Wasseypur!
In an exclusive chat with Instant Bollywood, Rajkummar shared some interesting career anecdotes. After Love Sex Aur Dhokha and Ragini MMS, Rajkummar Rao was offered Gangs of Wasseypur by Anurag Kashyap.
EXCLUSIVE: Rajkummar Rao Was Originally Supposed To Be One Of The Main Leads In Gangs Of Wasseypur!
At first, the film was supposed to focus on Rajkummar and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and both even visited Wasseypur to understand the people and their way of life.
“Initially it was supposed to just be me and Nawaz Siddiqui in it. The film was meant to explore the rivalry between these two characters.So, Nawaz and I actually went to Wasseypur. We spent some time there, hanging out, and we stayed quite a few days just to do research, understand the language, the accent, and all that.”
But after finishing the script, Anurag told Rajkummar that the story had changed and his role had become much smaller. Since Rajkummar had started doing lead roles by then, Anurag gave him the choice to step back if he wanted to.

“Anurag called me and said, ‘The script’s ready now. But according to the current script, your character has ended up being really small. So, you see if you still want to do it. I’d love to have you in my film, but just check it out because you know how it goes—sometimes it’s like, ‘I just want to be the lead.’ So you decide. It’s actually a really small part now.”
Rajkummar Rao Agreed To A Smaller Role In Gangs Of Wasseypur Because He Wanted To Work With Good Filmmakers
But Rajkummar went for the role of Shamshad Alam, small as it was. And the rest is history.
“So I told them, ‘Look, I’m not greedy about main lead roles. I want to work with good filmmakers, and I’d love to do this. And I’m glad I did it. I’m really glad I went for it.”
That small part in Gangs of Wasseypur might not have been the biggest role of his career, but it showed the kind of choices Rajkummar was willing to make. It wasn’t about the screen time. It was about the story, the people, and the chance to grow as an actor.
Looking back, that decision says a lot about who Rajkummar Rao is. Talented, humble, and always chasing good work instead of fame. No wonder he’s carved a place for himself among the finest actors in the industry.
