There’s no way to express how fullyLee Jung-jae’s portrayal of Gi-hun has won the hearts of viewers. Squid Game fans were overwhelmingly endeared to him through the gut-wrenching first season, and have stood behind him for the ambitious second season. No doubt, Season 3 will see us rooting for Player 456 again. But part of Squid Game’s appeal is its ability to create doomed side characters whom we root against. Season 2 presents the latter in self-described Shaman, Seon-nyeo (Chae Kook-hee), Player 044. Overly serious and ominous, Seon-nyeo’s prophetic statements are bizarre, off-putting, and easily put aside while you root for your favorite. But – even if Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is unlikely to forego his grounded criticism of capitalism for a more mystical turn – Player 044 will shape Season 3.
