Although they would sadly get into a feud over the casting of the science fiction film The Beach, Danny Boyleand Ewan McGregorhad a terrific working relationship that could be compared to that of Quentin Tarantino and Samuel L. Jackson or Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg. McGregor had his breakout role in Boyle’s directorial debut, Shallow Grave, which was a low-budget thriller that showed just how creative the pair could be on a limited budget. Their subsequent collaboration, Trainspotting, was widely celebrated and instantly heralded as one of the greatest Scottish films ever made. Maintaining that consistency of quality is challenging, as McGregor and Boyle were initially met with backlash for their work on the road trip thriller A Life Less Ordinary.
