EXCLUSIVE: Nimrat Kaur Did Her Own Hair And Makeup For The Lunchbox, Wrapped Her Role In 9 Days
When The Lunchbox released, no one expected it to become a global phenomenon. But for Nimrat Kaur, it wasn’t just a hit film; it was the beginning of a completely new chapter.

“It was a tsunami of a new chapter in my life. It was like a new page flipped,” Nimrat recalls. A small-budget film shot in under a month, The Lunchbox had no big sets or starry perks.
“We shot it in about 29 to 30 days. My portion was shot in 9 days.”
There were no vanity vans or makeup teams on location. Nimrat handled it all on her own.
“No hair or makeup person on set. Nothing. I tied my hair myself with a rubber band, applied kajal on my own… There isn’t a dot of professional makeup on me in that film. It’s just what I had, maybe a little lip balm,” she shares.

She took on the role simply because she loved the script, without knowing who her co-stars would be. “Once I was locked for the film, I was told, ‘Okay, there’s Irrfan sir, there’s Nawaz.’”
Even though Nimrat and Irrfan played central characters, they never shot any scenes together. “I didn’t have the honor of working with Irrfan sir… we are just individually in our own spaces.”
Despite its minimalistic approach, The Lunchbox struck a chord with audiences across the world. Nimrat believes the film resonated because of its emotional depth. “I think Lunchbox connected with people because it tapped into those emotions of longing, loneliness, love for food.”
She adds, “All of us want to believe that… because of this mistake, something good actually happened. It’s almost like you win a lottery.”
At its core, The Lunchbox was about hope, longing, and the belief that life can surprise you in the quietest ways. Just like it did for Nimrat.
